December 03 2017
The victory of Isstoora at Southwell on Friday (left) bought us to an important milestone, that of 50 winners for 2017, our first full season with a license. These wins have been achieved at a strike rate of 20% and from a total of only 44 individual horses. We couldn’t have achieved this without the help of many people. Our staff and work riders, who take care of the horses to the highest standards, are the most integral part of our success. Eddy Greatrex, Luke Morris and Oisin Murphy are important members of the team, both in the mornings riding work and in the afternoons at the races, and I am very grateful for all that they have contributed to our success. Finally our owners, who have been so supportive this year. Again, we could not do anything without their support and I am delighted whenever we go some way towards repaying that by training them winners.
However, it is only the beginning of December and hopefully we can keep on kicking with a busy month ahead. Isstoora herself looked a nice addition to the team, having been purchased by Tom Biggs of Blandford Bloodstock to join the team at Saxon Gate from this year’s Tattersalls October Horses in Training Sale. She will be seen out again this month, along with another new purchase Karijini who should run this week. It was great to see Chevallier back in action and in good form, with a 2nd place over an inadequate trip in a 7F Conditions Race at Lingfield. Chevallier (or Kenny as he is known at home) had to be rushed straight to colic surgery after his last race at Epsom on Oaks Day, so we were delighted to see him back to form on his first run back after a long recovery. He will also be seen out again this week at Chelmsford.
The yearlings are now mostly in with us. Their pre-trainers have all done a great job with them and I am delighted with how well they have done since the sales. The quality is definitely well up on last year and there look to be some sharp types amongst them.
