Christmas came early for Saxon Gate on Saturday as Petite Jack won the Listed Quebec Stakes at Lingfield Park. Given a fantastic ride by Luke Morris, who had him in a perfect position throughout the race, he picked up well in the straight and held the late challengers at bay. We are so grateful to his adoring owners Bill and Jan Burn (below in the Winners Enclosure) for sending him to us in the Spring, and I am delighted that he has continued to progress and has now won a Stakes Race. His programme from here will follow a fairly obvious path of races, the Winter Derby Trial, the Winter Derby, and the Easter Classic. These are all over Course and Distance at Lingfield, a track where he is now 6 from 9. In the short term he can look forward to lots of Polo Mints on Bill and Jan’s next visit!

Saturday capped what has been a great month for Saxon Gate with Snowy Winter, Pulsating, General Hazard, Mach One, and new purchases Karijini and Isstoora all winning for the yard in December.

Snowy Winter’s 4 Length victory on Fibresand debut at Southwell, in what appeared to be a race full of progressive horses, was very impressive and she has now won five races this year. She will be aimed at another Southwell Handicap in January and then we may have a think about races on the conventional dirt for her abroad. A €7500 purchase by Tom Biggs at Goffs in February when still unraced, she has been a revelation this year.

General Hazard picked up his fourth win for the yard this year at Kempton Park in the closest of photo finishes. He has now won two races in a year by a nose which must be a pretty rare distinction. Purchased for 20,000 guineas at Tattersalls in February, he has been a great asset to the team this year.

We still have a good-sized squad on the go for the All Weather, with a few new additions from recent sales, and the new crop of yearlings have settled in well and seem like a quality group of horses. Most of the older horses are now back in from their breaks and it is great to see them all having done so well for their holidays.

Happy Christmas from all of us at Saxon Gate!
